A calm way to practise salary questions before the call
Salary conversations in German hiring can feel abrupt. Rehearse ranges, trade-offs, and when to pause before you answer live.
Salary questions in German interviews can arrive earlier than applicants expect. A calm answer usually includes a researched range, the assumptions behind it (role level, location, on-site days), and a willingness to discuss total package.
Practise saying the range out loud until it does not sound like a question. Soft Engine Co often pairs salary rehearsal with an Offer & Contract Review Call later in the process, when numbers become concrete.
A simple drill
- Write your range and one sentence of rationale.
- Have a friend ask for it twice in a row, then ask why.
- Practise pausing for two seconds before answering โ silence is allowed.
If negotiation feels uncomfortable, that is normal. The goal of interview preparation is not theatrical confidence; it is having words ready when the question lands.
